Robert Barrer Receives Prestigious Burton Award for Excellence in Legal Writing

May 23, 2017 — Barclay Damon LLP announces Robert A. Barrer, the law firm’s Chief Ethics and Risk Management Partner, has been honored with a 2017 Burton Law360 Distinguished Writing Award.

Robert is among 25 honorees who received an award at a ceremony held at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, on May 22. Robert was honored for his article “Careless Keystrokes and Bad Decisions—New York Law on Inadvertent Disclosure,” published by New York Legal Ethics Reporter. The article discusses the ramifications of inadvertent disclosure referenced in New York State’s rules of professional conduct for attorneys and civil statues and rules.

This year’s award marks the second time Robert has won a Burton Award for his writing. He received his first Burton Award in 2006 for “Unintended Consequences: Avoiding and Addressing the Inadvertent Disclosure of Documents,” published in the New York State Bar Journal.

John P. Langan, Barclay Damon’s managing partner, said, “We thought we couldn’t be any more proud of Robert after he won his first Burton Award in 2006, but he proved us wrong. To win two of the ‘Pulitzer Prizes of legal writing’ is truly an honor for both Robert and the firm. Our great thanks to the Burton Awards selection committee for recognizing and honoring Robert and his exceptional writing talent.”

Affiliated with the Library of Congress, the Burton Foundation is a nonprofit academic organization dedicated to excellence in legal writing. Nominations for Burton Awards come from the nation’s largest law firms and law schools across the country. Now in its eighteenth year, Burton Awards are selected by professors at some of the most prestigious law schools in the country, including Yale Law School, Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, and Columbia Law School.

Robert is responsible for all ethics, conflicts, loss prevention, and continuing legal education activities at Barclay Damon. He counsels firm attorneys and provides analysis and advice on ethical questions involving conflicts of interest, privileges, and legal issues implicating the Rules of Professional Conduct.
